Treadclimber

A few years ago, Bowflex introduced a product called the Treadclimber. It is a combination stair climber and treadmill. Marketed as the latest workout machine of choice, treadclimbers are heavily advertised, but with mixed reviews.

Nautilus also has a model, but most of these are located in fitness centers rather than individual homes.

Treadclimbers have two separate revolving belts that you walk on and that simultaneously move up and down during a stepping motion. But, the motion takes getting used to because your feet can actually slip between the belts. This is different from an elliptical, which provides more stability even though the angle of an elliptical's foot pedal can sometimes be a challenge... especially with cheaper models.

The workout with a treadclimber is okay in that you will work up a good sweat, but the price you pay for the limited models currently on the market is pretty pricey when compared with either the elliptical trainer or the standard treadmill. Plus, your maximum speed with the treadclimber is rather limited... as is the stride.

Bowflex makes a big deal about their TC5000 model, which combines and unleashes the power of the treadmill, stairclimber and elliptical... all in one machine. They claim that their unique "Dual-Treadles" let you actually walk forward, step up and enjoy a smooth low-impact during the routine. Perhaps... but, at $2,500 this baby should also talk.

The treadclimber weights in at 222 pounds and it isn't something you want to have to move anytime soon. In fact, be careful during assembly and make sure you have someone to help you. Also, hang onto the receipt. While the warranty is pretty good, it's not unusual to have to jump through hoops when making a service call or seeking a replacement part.

Look, there is no doubt that a lot of scientific research has gone into the development of the Treadclimber machine. Perhaps in a few years, when more competition produces dozens of models and prices from which to choose, the treadclimber will gain in popularity. But, until then, you are probably better off sticking with well-made elliptical equipment.
